Welcome to Year 1 - Ash Class

The adults who work in Ash class are Miss Gregory and Mrs Mellor. Mrs Jewitt is the teaching assistant every Friday afternoon to cover Miss Gregory's PPA time.

Our PE day is Monday. Please ensure children come to school wearing a full PE kit every Monday and that jewellery is removed and long hair is tied back.

Your child's reading book will be changed weekly and a library book will be brought home once a week for you to share with your child. Please read daily with your child as this greatly supports their ability to access the full curriculum.

Here are some useful websites for your child:

  • Phonics PlayThis site offers a wide selection of fun phonic games and activities that allow children to practise their reading skills.
  • Topmarks: This website has a wide selection of Maths games and activities.
  • YouTube: Alphablocks and numberblocks.

Attendance and Punctuality

The school is open from 8.40am and classes start at 8.50am prompt where the register closes at 9am.  Please ensure your child is in the playground by 8:45am to ensure a calm and orderly start to the day. Our minimum attendance target for every child is 96%, and we value the support we receive from parents/carers in helping to achieve the best possible learning outcomes for their child/children. If your child is unable to attend school due to illness then please contact the office (01772 797397) giving the reason for absence.

Punctuality and regular attendance at school is a legal requirement. Absence and/or persistent lateness from school without good reason is an offence and may result in a prosecution. Please see the attendance page on this website for more information.

PE

PE is on Monday. Please ensure your child comes to school wearing their full PE kit every Monday. Please also ensure no jewellery is worn on these days and that long hair is tied back.

Reading

It is expected that your child reads EVERYDAY at home or at least 10 minutes. We change home reading books every week. Stickers and dojo points will be awarded to children who have read their book at home and had their reading record signed.

Children will also bring home a library book every Friday that they have chosen from our school library. Please share this book with your child and promote a love of reading.

Spellings

Children in Year 1 need to know how to read and spell the first 100 high frequency words. These will be sent home in the homework book.

Topic Homework

Our homework tasks are moving electronically. Your child will have an individual log in, where they can access their own learning portal. Children earn dojos for completing homework. There will also be a prize for the best commitment to homework each half-term.

There are wonderful learning experiences to enjoy and we hope you will continue to support the school in ensuring your child comes to school refreshed and ready to learn. Children should have their reading books and book bags in school every day.

The support you give your child in their home learning and hearing them read nightly is invaluable and has an impact on their attitude towards learning.
